Ayurvedic Roast – a healthy coffee alternative

For those of you unfamiliar with Ayurvedic medicine, here is a small intro:

Ayurveda is made up of two Sanskrit words: Ayu which means life and Veda which means the knowledge of. To know about life is Ayurveda. However, to fully comprehend the vast s cope of Ayurveda let us first define “Ayu” or life. According to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka, “ayu” is comprised of four essential parts. The combination of mind, body, senses and the soul.

Ayurveda is a wholistic system of medicine from India that uses a constitutional model. Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and folks with health challenges can improve their health.
There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique:

– Its recommendations will often be different for each person regarding which foods and which lifestyle they should follow in order to be completely healthy. This is due to it’s use of a constitutional model.
– Everything in Ayurveda is validated by observation, inquiry, direct examination and knowledge derived from the ancient texts.
– It understands that there are energetic forces that influence nature and human beings. These forces are called the doshas (vata, pitta, kapha).
– Because Ayurveda sees a strong connection between the mind and the body, a huge amount of information is available regarding this relationship.

I stick pretty closely to an Ayurvedic lifestyle and diet as I find it’s what suits my body the best. I am certainly not a Western medicine girl. I was brought up this way and when I look at how healthy and full of energy my parents are compared to lots of people their age this confirms it for me. I have had some Ayurvedic treatments in India and nothing compares.

In my quest for health and keeping a balance in my lifestyle I came across the great site Dosha Guru… I did their online quiz and I get weekly tips from them via email which are really interesting and informative. Now, I am a real coffee lover. I love to indulge in coffee and I take my time every morning when getting ready to sit down with my tea or coffee and flick through a magazine or browse the latest posts on my favourite blogs. The thing is, according to my dosha, vata, too much coffee causes me to go out of balance. It makes me jittery and I don’t feel grounded, when I have too much of course. So when I came across the Ayurvedic roast by Dosha Guru I knew I had to have it. I have it every morning and I feel a great boost and not like I am running on nervous energy like I often am with coffee. What’s more, this mix is healthy. As stated on their website: “Ayurvedic Roast is made with all organic ingredients, starting with fresh roasted barley, chicory root, and rye. On top of these healthy grains, we add our own unique herbal combination which has been used for centuries in the ancient tradition of Ayurveda: Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Brahmi”. These three herbs make for a dynamo mix and it’s a great start to your day.

I brew it in my Italian stovetop and sometimes put in some cardamom pods in there too as it’s one of my favourite spices. I’m a latté girl so I boil up a cloud of milk to have with it too. Bliss!

Voyager Candles

I discovered Voyager Candles recently and I am so glad I did. It’s hard to find candles that are 100% natural and I really don’t like burning candles that use unauthentic essential oils or wax that contains toxins. The idea of Voyager came to Kerrie almost two years ago. She has always been interested in fragrance, and have had the travel bug since she was eighteen years old. After 25 years in the fashion industry, she was ready for a career change, and travel-inspired perfumed candles seemed to be a good fit for her!

Voyager candles are made from a blend of soy, coconut and beeswax. For her candle manufacturer in Melbourne, it took many months to get the right wax recipe, one that contained no palm wax or paraffin (isnt’t that wonderful?!), and that suited the particular heat properties of the thermal glasses. The complex, but subtle Voyager fragrances are inspired by places Kerries loves, and are named after gardens around the world.

In total there are five candles in the Voyager range but it couldn’t have been more appropriate for me than to get the Melbourne and Paris inspired candles, bien sur! The Belleville candle is inspired by Paris and has amber, guiawood, vanilla, lavender and courmarin. It is very soft and I love the vanilla that comes through and fills my apartment. The Alexandra candle, inspired by Melbourne, and named after the Alexandra gardens has bergamot, petigrain, fig leaves, sandalwood and green tea. I love this one as it reminds me of big open spaces, freshly cut grass, big skies, warm northerly winds, cicadas, jetty walks and coastal drives… Gosh I miss Melbourne.

I highly recommend you to head over to Kerrie’s website Voyager Candles. Which candle would you choose and why? What places in the world have a strong memory with you? I think it’s such a great idea, a candle that recreates a memory. Our memory is very strongly linked to our smell so it’s genius.

Happy weekend everybody! I’m off to market now ♥

Nest of the Bluebird

Genevieve from Nest of the Bluebird started creating when she checked out a stack of books from the library on ethnic adornments from around the world. African tribal beadwork, Oaxacan embroidery, Hmong Hill Tribe needlework, the colors used by the Morrocan Berber, the brightly hued silks of India. They all coalesced in her mind and what emerged was her current collection of designs. She started making these pieces based on her own desire for a bold pop of colour to enhance her often neutral wardrobe. She wanted something lightweight and comfortable even when the pieces are larger in size.

Her process begins with her favorite part, the selection of colours. Much of her day is absorbed with care of her impish 2 year old daughter Vivian, and as they play with blocks or she watches her play at the park, her mind is a flurry of colour combinations. She finds inspiration everywhere she goes. Textile prints, nature, children’s books, art, and photography. When she finally lands on the “right” colour combination, it’s like she has written a little melody that she just wants to keep humming. Each colour arrangement has the ability to evoke a particular mood or emotion.

She loves the process of creating something handmade and then sending it out into the world. She hopes the wearers of her creations feel energized, confident and maybe even a little sassy. Perhaps they will feel the good vibes infused into them by her hands as she happily created them. She has so many ideas for future creations so stayed tuned!

What a great message to pass out to you before the new week starts. Isn’t it lovely to hear that there are people out there that love what they do.

“Les petites…”

I bought two items from Les Petites just before Christmas. I fell in love instantly with the “revival” leather skirt and the black silk/cotton blouse with lace trimming.

Les Petites is a lovely French brand because it does classic pieces but they are a little more “edgy” than your average and they can be both dressed up and down.

I am lusting over this top. It’s a good time to go shopping because the sales have hit us here in Paris! Look on their website for more details and follow them on facebook and twitter.

In other news….keep your eyes on our boutique page Cleopatra’s Bling as we will be announcing a giveaway in the next week.

I think the lipstick Russian Red by Mac would be a perfect happy touch for Winter, don’t you think?

This week I’ll be showing you the hand-woven quilt I got in India, it’s so intricate and bohemian! I am smitten.

A unicorn and deer afternoon in Paris

To make life sweeter, I love my afternoon latté and a little treat. On Thursday I decided to get myself a handful of choukettes (a delightful little puff of French pastry with sugar on top- not to be overdone in quantity). Coffee time is so cosy at the moment here in my apartment because the sun goes down early and I turn on the big lamp on our living room which gives a honey glow to the room and I sink into the couch with my latté.

I am so smitten with my new cups from Claudia from Superfumi.

Being Australian, I absolutely love European animals because my childhood was koalas, kangaroos and possums. I find deers so precious. Their big eyes! Obviously my unicorn obsession is just because I’m a girly girl.

I highly reccomend you visit her Etsy shop here because she has a new range that just came out. All of the products are handmade in the UK.

What treats do you have planned for the weekend?

Adorbale Cupcake Toppers to Brighten up Any Day

These cupcake toppers are made by a lovely lady who is supporting her family because she is an American Army Wife. I cannot imagine what this must be like but what better way to make her role as a mother and army wife meet by being crafty to support her family. Her Etsy shop is filled with cute cupcake toppers. She is offering a 10% discount for all of my readers on her Etsy shop for the month of November with the code: PARIS10. Why don’t you stock up for Christmas?

She sent me koala toppers because I am Australian 🙂

And frogs for my Frenchman, J.

They are really well made, strong, perfectly cut and do not bend easily.

I cannot wait to make cupcakes with them and to post photos for you all.

The Best Cupcake Sprinkles I’ve Ever Seen

I was lucky enough to be sent a huge box of sprinkles from Laura from The Sprinkle Box Shop. Not only are her sprinkles bright and colourful, but they come in generous sizes and she sends them off quickly! The quality is really high, they don’t crumple or discolour like many sprinkles do.

Laura is a young and inspired lady that started her business whilst organising her son’s 2nd birthday party last year. Laura had ideas racing through her mind at 3:00 and 4:00 in the morning while feeding their at the time 4- month-old baby girl. This turned into details on paper, which turned into conversations and connections, resulting in her own business a year later.

There is not a single colour that she doesn’t do!

I made flourless chocolate cupcakes with chocolate icing and the sprinkles rocked my socks!

Click here or here to access her shop, and like her facebook page here!

If you need wonderful illustrations done for you like the one just above I highly reccomment Elodie Garbé who is a young French graphic designer and illustrator. Her new site is here and her blog here.
