Indian Supermarket in Paris- a clash of two worlds

I’m sure you may have noticed that I like India… (Oh you haven’t? Click here). So what did I do? I went and found an epic Indian supermarket here in Paris, got mighty nostalgic, bought lots of ginger and ocra to make myself feel good then went home and fried it all up. I think we can conclude that I should just move to India, would make things a lot easier.

A bit of nostalgia for India

I feel very at home in India, and I am charmed by the hustle and bustle, bright colours and warm faces.
Here are a few photos of my first trip in India, just because I am feeling a little nostalgic.

Day 10 in Pondicherry

Day 10 in Pondicherry J bought me a beautiful beautiful antique box. It has so many little compartments inside for my special jewelry. We bought it off the side of a road from a lovely man. You can see below the stall and the man that sold it to us. He was just so happy and it made me think about all the people that earn so much more than him but are less grateful. This man sent out rays of sunshine to all that spoke with him.

The second highlight of this particular day was the dog family we came across in the street. I wanted to take them home with me. Just look at those faces.

The man you can see below is a milkman. They ride around Pondicherry with little tanks of milk attached to their bikes. It’s so charming.

Day 9 in Pondicherry

My mother and I did a cooking class at the Sita centre in Pondicherry. It consisted of a class of three hours and then eating what we had cooked. Before actually cooking the teacher takes you to the Big Market on Gandhi Road and then the fun begins! As I was so busy cooking I didn’t get to take many good photos but I at least got the photos of the market, which is really interesting, and of the final results of the food. The market is broken down into “sections”. There is the meat section, the flower section, the fish section, the spice section, the fabric section (where I bought a magnificent hand woven bead throw), the vegetable and fruit section. I really loved this market with its high energy and playful atmosphere.

I will re-make these recipes soon and post them for you so you can get a taste of the south of India. I miss that place so much already.

Vintage glasses from Pondicherry, India.

I bought a lot of wonderful things to wear, cook with and for our home in Pondicherry. These glasses are just some of them. Aren’t they wonderful? My favourite is the one with the lady in the bathing suit. I got them from the shops next to La Maison Rose in Rue Romain Rolland in Pondicherry.

The sweet life. This café, La Maison Rose is one of our favourite places to chill out and have a good coffee. They serve great meals too.

Christmas in Pondicherry

We had our Christmas dinner at the Villa Shanti. Not only was the atmosphere special, but the food was fresh and clean. I just adore the stars, they were what made it so special in my eyes.

Day 7 in Pondicherry

Today we had a coffee that is meant to be the best in Pondicherry- they boil the milk for hours and hours but the rest we don’t know because it’s their secret and what gives them their charm. Have you ever tried Indian sweets before? I cannot go a day without them. Since we’ve been here each afternoon J and I go out for our coffee and very sweet slice of whatever Indian delight we decide on.

Tomorrow we are going to talk to some local jewelry makers about some designs I’ve had in mind for Cleopatra’s Bling. I’m sure you’ll love what’s to come so stay tuned 🙂
